With the internet being easily accessible to just about anyone, do-it-yourself trusts and wills and trusts and will templates are becoming very popular. However, there are some important things you need to know about these options and understand why you should avoid using them at all costs.

1.   The number one problem with will and trusts templates, is that they are all cookie-cutter templates and are not unique and created for all of you and your family’s needs.

2.   Trusts and will templates are not created with all 50 states in mind. This means that you may not be following all the laws regarding your estate and other assets.

3.   State tax laws regarding estate change all the time and these templates do not reflect those changes.

4.   There is the possibility that other forms may need to be filled out when creating a will and these templates do not provide those forms. This could make your will invalid and create problems years down the road for your family, which will unfortunately not be noticed until after your death, and then it is too late.

5.   These templates create a false sense of security and do not provide you with all the correct knowledge that you need and would get, if you were to create your will and trust with a professional. Yes, hiring a professional to help you draft you will is costly, but it provides you with the relief knowing that your family will be taken care of once you pass away.

6.   You can create a will and trust with a template online for cheap. However, if the will and trust are not created correctly or there was a mistake that was made, but not noticed until after the will and trust were created, you can actually wind up spending more money in order to hire a professional and have it drafted correctly.

7.   These templates do not allow you to list special instructions involving your beneficiaries if they happen to have special needs or directions involving children that are from a previous relationship.
